2012 Hewitt Lecture: "The Future of Medicare and Medicaid"

Pioneer's 2012 Hewitt Health Care Lecture enjoyed record attendance, and featured a presentation by Dr. Don Berwick, formerly the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Dr. Berwick was followed by James Capretta, Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Don Berwick is the United States’ leading advocate for high-quality health care. He recently stepped down as the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. For 22 years prior, he was the founding CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, a nonprofit dedicated to improving health care around the world. A pediatrician by background, he has also served on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School.

James C. Capretta serves as a Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Capretta served for nearly four years as an Associate Director at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), where he had responsibility for health care, Social Security, education, and welfare programs.

Dr. Berwick and Mr. Capretta participated in a panel discussion moderated by Tom Scully, senior counsel at Alston + Bird, LLP and a general partner with Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, a private equity firm in New York. Mr. Scully was the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), from 2001 to 2004. Before joining CMS, he served as president and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals from 1995 to 2001.

Report: The Elephant in the Room: Unfunded Public Employee Health Care Benefits & GASB 45.

Pioneer's groundbreaking review of public employee healthcare commitments outlined how to address the Commonwealth's $13 billion liability. The primary recommendations, including the creation of a separate, irrevocable trust and a down payment of $425 million, were adopted by Governor Patrick.
