It is widely assumed that Massachusetts is an expensive state in which to do business. From its reputation for high taxes to high housing and home-heating costs, the Commonwealth is imagined by too many people to be "old, cold and expensive."

Last year, Pioneer produced a report detailing just how expensive. In Measuring Up? The Cost of Doing Business in Massachusetts [PDF], we broke out 11 different business costs in 9 different industries and compared them across 7 states. The goal was to go beyond anecdote and provide the data that offers a clear, digestible picture of a complex problem.

Coming Up:

Having defined the issue, Pioneer has embarked on a series of studies to address specific costs. The first will be a policy brief outlining ways to reduce the cost of unemployment insurance in Massachusetts and to apportion it more equitably among the state's employers. Please look for it this fall.
