Cobly Hewitt

Pioneer Institute, recognizing the commitment of its "beloved, bow-tied chairman", Charles Colby Hewitt Jr., to Pioneer and to the health and welfare of the citizens of Massachusetts, initiated in his honor an endowment fund for a Healthcare Research and Lecture program.

For twenty five years a trustee of the New England Deaconess Hospital, for four years its chairman, and subsequently active as chair emeritus at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, "Colby" joined Pioneer's board in 1993 and assumed the chair in 1997. He remained chair until his untimely death in 2005.

The Charles Colby Hewitt Jr. Healthcare Research and Lecture Program

Looking to the future, the most critical issue facing our federal, state and local governments may very well be the rapidly inflating cost of healthcare. Presently, healthcare consumes more than 16% of GDP. At current rates of increase, healthcare spending by local, state and federal governments will by 2050 roughly equal their 2006 budgets, crowding out other spending priorities, including education and public infrastructure.

Through the Hewitt program, Pioneer will explore how choice and competition in the healthcare industry can improve quality while reducing costs.
