Day 6: MBTA
What should the Mayor's role be in supporting the MBTA, keeping it affordable for residents, and encouraging better service? Response from Mayor Menino:The MBTA provides critical service to Boston residents, connecting our neighborhoods and reducing congestion on our roadways. For many residents, the T is the best and only option. As Mayor, I will continue to make sure the T provides reliable, safe, and effective service for our residents. Have A Seat At The Table To best advocate for Boston riders, we should have a seat on the new state transportation board of directors. The City pays over $70 million dollars in annual assessments for the MBTA. As a major stakeholder and funder, the City must be part of the decision-making process, especially with respect to changes in fares and service. Advocate For Neighborhood Investments Public transportation links people with all the opportunities Boston offers. We must support critical MBTA efforts that increase access to opportunity such as Silver Line Phase III, improved Fenway and Allston commuter rail service, and increased reliability and expansion of bus service. Support Long-Term Funding Solutions Residents deserve a public transportation it can rely on for years to come. I will support solutions that ensure the T is on stable financial footing, even if it means exploring tough decisions such as a gas tax.
