Would you support an effort to authorize casino gambling in Massachusetts and in Boston?

Response from Mayor Menino:

I support the creation of a destination casino in Boston – one that would be a strong asset in boosting Boston’s tourism and convention industry. A destination casino would:

Create Jobs

It is estimated that, statewide, casinos would create thousands of construction jobs and permanent casino-related jobs. In addition, the investment and economic activity would help catalyze additional growth in hospitality businesses, small and large.

Generate Revenue

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts faces serious financial challenges; those challenges, in turn, place significant budgetary pressure on the state’s cities and towns. For example, the Commonwealth cut local aid to Boston by over $90 million last year. Gaming revenue could generate hundreds of millions of dollars in new local aid for municipalities, allowing them to preserve the front-line services that residents expect and deserve.

Grow the Economy

Tourism and convention business are a critical component of the Boston economy. A destination casino in Boston could complement our award-winning convention center and help attract tourist to our hotels and increase attendance at our great art museums, theaters and restaurants.
