Would you support an effort to authorize casino gambling in Massachusetts and in Boston?

Response from Councilor Flaherty:

First and foremost, the city needs to better manage its government programs and finances before it jumps to a quick revenue solution such as casinos, which we all know are not even recession-proof. While I can appreciate the potential economic benefits that resort casinos could produce for Massachusetts, I nevertheless do not believe that the city of Boston is an appropriate location. As a large metropolitan area that already has significant traffic congestion troubles, our fair share of social woes characteristic of many urban settings and a close proximity to a major international airport, I do not think we have the suitable infrastructure to support the success of any resort casino. In addition, Boston is already home to numerous restaurants and businesses - many of which are family owned — that could be seriously jeopardized by bringing in a resort casino to the area. A resort casino located outside of Boston could still provide many of our residents with numerous job opportunities and will provide a boost to our local economy and tourist industry since many traveling to a Massachusetts casino will still travel in and out of Boston.
