Thought Experiment
By Steve PoftakAugust 29th, 2008
If someone like Wesley Clark was the 2008 Democratic nominee for President, and he picked a newly elected Governor, like say…..Deval Patrick….as his vice presidential nominee, would there be the same focus on the nominee’s experience?
Now I know that’s not an exact analogue, given McCain’s emphasis on his experience over Obama’s plus McCain’s 10 year age gap with Clark, but I think the focus and tone of the coverage would be much different.
UPDATE — Or maybe not. Yikes. Did anyone do any vetting, at all?

Would it make a difference that Palin is widely popular (with both parties) in her state and that Patrick increasingly isn’t popular with either?
Also had Patrick defeated, say Michael Dukakas (back when he was popular) in the primary and then defeated Mitt Romney in the general — would that have made a difference?
My point: Palin’s race was more difficult than Patrick’s and two years later she has an almost unheard of approval rating.
