The Nuclear Option in the Leafy Suburbs

Steve PoftakBy Steve Poftak

Sudbury is highlighted in an article in this weekend’s Globe as the primary bad guy in the effort to develop a bike trail that will stretch from Lowell to Framingham. (Those with long memories will recall that many of the same arguments were brought up in regards to the Minuteman Bike Path as well.)

Tucked in the article was this precious nugget:

Some opponents have gone so far as to make unusual threats. If the trail is built, some said, they will sell their land to developers who want to build dense clusters of affordable units.

i remember the minuteman opposition, too… great catch, that line in the globe article is a gem… i think there is something in human nature, which causes us to believe what we see from our back porch is ours, too.

look at what many abutters to public ponds and waterways do: the carve out boat launches, cut down old growth, etc. to improve access, and their views.

i have never seen a bike path (my friends live near one in tony barrington, ri) bring crime to a neighborhood. still, i don’t blame them for being wary of any government plan.

Thanks for the note Mark. Pretty rough treatment for the Sudburyites in today’s Globe letters section as well.
